Denver Broncos

- by Howard Balzer

Before Saturday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said he was hopeful of naming a starting quarterback heading into Week 3 of the preseason.

Trevor Siemian started against San Francisco and saw a second-quarter pass get intercepted by S Eric Reid and returned 42 yards for a touchdown. In the final minute of the quarter,

Mark Sanchez lost two fumbles on sacks in the red zone. (The 49ers gave the ball back on a fumble after the first one.)

Paxton Lynch had two second-half touchdown passes but also threw an interception. The three quarterbacks combined for a passer rating of 72.8 and were sacked six times.

“He is behind the others from a knowledge standpoint as far as running the group,” Kubiak said of Lynch, a first-round draft pick out of Memphis. Rookie watch: The competition continues between rookie P

Riley Dixon and incumbent Britton Colquitt. Dixon was the holder on all four place-kicks Saturday and averaged 40.7 yards on three punts thanks to a 51yarder in the fourth quarter. Colquitt averaged 35 yards on three punts, but he kicked twice from 49ers territory. ... Fourth-round pick Devontae Booker rushed for 36 yards on nine carries. ... ILB

Zaire Anderson, an undrafted free agent in 2015 who spent the season on the practice squad, forced two fumbles against San Francisco. Noteworthy: With Jeff Heuerman sidelined by hamstring issues, TE Virgil Green had four receptions for 57 yards against the 49ers. “Virgil’s been a warrior. He’s been battling. This is an opportunity in Virgil’s career to become a starter,” Kubiak said. “He’s obviously taken advantage of it.” ... OLB DeMarcus Ware (back) remains on the non-football illness list.
