Bell played six snaps as a running back and nine as a wide receiver — motioning in and out of the slot as well as standing out wide — in the first quarter. That allowed Pittsburgh to have him and fellow running back DeAngelo Williams on the field together.
The offense erupted in the first 15 minutes, scoring three touchdowns for a franchise-record 22 points in that span.
And once the Chiefs tried to adjust, Bell’s flexibility again confused them.
Offensive coordinator Todd Haley flipped the script in the second period, lining Bell up at running back 13 times while giving him just four snaps at receiver. On one play, Bell even lined up at tight end.
More important, the Steelers carried a 29-0 lead.
“He’d be a great wide receiver,” Coates, an actual receiver, told USA TODAY Sports. “Sometimes I think he is a wide receiver, the way he runs routes.”
Bell wouldn’t say if his receiver snaps would continue.
But he did definitively offer his opinion.
“DeAngelo, he’s too good of a player to just have watching,” Bell said. “I love getting out there and running routes, so why not have D-Will at running back and me at receiver? We’re going to utilize all of our weapons and personnel packages.
“We’re a better team that way.”
