Milwaukee Brewers
Chase Anderson won the final spot in the rotation during the last days of spring training when fellow right-hander Matt
Garza (right groin) was placed on the 10-day disabled list.
Anderson thinks he is ready to improve upon 2016, his first season with the Brewers, when he had a 9-11 record with a 4.39 ERA in 31 games (30 starts). He was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a trade the previous offseason.
Anderson gained 10 pounds during the offseason, and his fastball routinely reached 95 mph in spring training after averaging 91.1 last year.
“I can get down the hill with a little bit more weight,” Anderson said. “I wasn’t looking to throw harder, I was looking to be stronger later in games.”
The Brewers are optimistic Garza’s injury isn’t serious and that he can begin a rehab assignment sometime before the end of April. “I just keep thinking about the
Rocky movies,” Garza said. “I can either be the middle fight or I can be the last one.”
Right- hander reliever Jared Hughes was signed April 2 after being released by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is expected to team with righty Corey Knebel to set up closer Neftali Feliz.
