Two rookies opened the season in the rotation — appropriately named right-hander Rookie Davis and left-hander Amir Garrett.

Davis was scheduled to make his major league debut Thursday against the Philadelphia Phillies, and Garrett was slated to do the same the next night against the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Garrett, 24, was a combined 7-8 with a 2.55 ERA in 25 games with Class AAA Louisville and Class AA Pensacola (Fla.) last season. Davis, 23, pitched in a combined 24 games with the same clubs and was 10-5 with a 3.82 ERA.

Garrett and Davis join a rotation that includes 40-year-old right-hander Bronson Arroyo, who has not pitched in a major league game since 2014 because of elbow and shoulder injuries.

Second baseman Scooter Gennett was claimed off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers and will serve as a super utility player. He is expected to see time at third base and the outfield corners despite making all 380 of his starts in the field at second base during his four seasons with Milwaukee. Two other infielder-outfield

ers, Arismendy Alcantara and Patrick Kivlehan, won bench jobs along with Rule 5 catcher

Stuart Turner. The Reds began the season with 13 pitchers and wanted reserves who provide versatility.
