Arizona Diamondbacks

-

Better health among core players sent the Diamondbacks into this season with renewed optimism.

Center fielder A.J. Pollock, who missed most of the 2016 season because of an elbow fracture suffered on the eve of the season, impressed scouts and looked fully healthy in spring training. The same held true for corner outfielder David Peralta.

Pollock and Peralta have had good seasons when healthy. That means the Arizona lineup could be potent given that Paul

Goldschmidt is a perennial MVP candidate, Yasmany Tomas hit 31 home runs last season and fellow 26-year-old Jake Lamb had 29, and scouts deem sophomore Brandon Drury, 24, a potential impact hitter.

A candidate to rejoin the team during the season is utility infielder Domingo Leyba. Scouts praised the 21-year-old’s overall performance (.310 with three doubles in 29 at-bats) in the Cactus League, but he was sent to Class AA on April 1.

The No. 2 starter to open last season, Shelby Miller, was penciled into the No. 5 spot this month. Miller showed good arm strength in spring training but struggled to locate the ball to his arm side. Left-hander Patrick

Corbin, whose spring camp earned good reviews, began as the No. 2 starter.
