Tampa Bay Rays

Evan Longoria is the answer to this year’s trivia question: Who hit the first home run and recorded the first RBI of the major league season?

After a first-inning sacrifice fly, he hit a two-run shot off Tanaka on opening day. That in itself was no small feat.

Longoria started his career 2-for-21 with no home runs and one RBI against Tanaka but has two home runs and four RBI in his last three at-bats against the Yankees right-hander.

That includes Sept. 21, when Longoria was part of three consecutive home runs and four in an inning against Tanaka.

It was Longoria’s fourth opening-day home run. The others were in 2010, 2012 and 2015.

“That’s why Evan Longoria’s been such a staple for the Tampa Bay Rays for so long,” manager

Kevin Cash said. The opening-day home run was Longoria’s 33rd against the Yankees, tying him with Jose Bautista for most by an opponent among active players. Longoria’s 31 home runs against them while playing third base are second all time to Brooks Robinson’s 34.

uChris Archer earned the opening-day win, marking the first time he has been above .500 since Sept. 6, 2015. He went 9-19 last season.

uArcher’s start was the 15th in a row for the Rays on opening day by a pitcher 30 or younger. Their last over-30 starter in an opener: Erik Bedard.
