Boston Red Sox
Heading into spring training, the plan had been for Hanley
Ramirez to be the primary designated hitter and play about 40 games at first base, sitting
Mitch Moreland, a left-handed hitter, against lefties.
But Ramirez was unable to take the field in an exhibition game because of a right shoulder injury that prevented him from throwing.
That led the Red Sox to hand the final roster spot to Steve
Selsky, who had been acquired from the Cincinnati Reds on a waiver claim. Primarily an outfielder, Selsky played first base in the minors with Cincinnati.
Selsky, a right-handed hitter, won the final spot over infielder
Marco Hernandez, a left-handed batter. “The ability to play first base was a major component for the decision,” manager John Farrell said. “For a waiver claim, he has been everything and more of what we could have hoped for. It’s a young guy, durable, athletic, and bat-to-ball ability is there.”
uLeft- hander David Price, who started the season on the disabled list because of a left forearm/elbow injury, progressed to throwing from 90 feet.
Farrell said the plan is for Price to continue light tossing every two out of three days, increasing the length of his throws but not yet the intensity. There was no timetable for Price’s return to the rotation.
