Baltimore Orioles

-

Right fielder Trey Mancini, one of Baltimore’s top prospects, made his first opening-day roster.

Mancini, a right-handed hitter, likely will platoon with left-handed-hitting Seth Smith. Since being picked in the eighth round of the 2013 amateur draft, Mancini had played only first base before this spring.

Manager Buck Showalter said he was satisfied with what he saw from Mancini in the outfield, and Mancini told pressboxonline.com, “I feel really comfortable out there, actually. Every time you play out there, you get more and more comfortable.”

uRight- hander Chris Tillman, who began the season on the disabled list, could return in early May. He has progressed to bullpen sessions since receiving a cortisone injection in his shoulder March 15. He could pitch in an extended spring training game April 11, then begin a minor league rehab stint. uPedro Alvarez, who rejoined the Orioles on a minor league deal in mid-March, will start the season in the minors, where he is expected to continue his transition to the outfield. The second overall pick in 2008 by the Pittsburgh Pirates has never played outfield in a regular-season major league game.
