Detroit Tigers

-

The Tigers decided to go with youth in their rotation when the final spots were won by left-handers Daniel Norris and Matt Boyd. Norris, 23, and Boyd, 26, were acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in 2015 in a trade for David Price. They will join a rotation that includes 24-year-old righthander Michael Fulmer, last year’s AL rookie of the year, and veteran righties Justin Verlan

der and Jordan Zimmermann. Norris has gone 7-4 with a 3.64 ERA in 32 major league games over three seasons, and Boyd is 7-11 with a 5.64 ERA in 33 games in two seasons.

To make room for Norris and Boyd, Mike Pelfrey was released and fellow right-hander Anibal

Sanchez was moved to long relief.

Sanchez’s salary is $16.8 million this season in the final guaranteed year of his five-year, $80 million contract. The Tigers ate Pelfrey’s $8 million salary in the second year of his two-year, $16 million contract.

The Tigers will platoon in two outfield spots to begin the season. Rookie right-handed hitter JaCoby Jones and switchhitting utility player Austin Ro

mine will man center field. Lefthanded-hitting Tyler Collins and right-handed-hitting Mikie

Mahtook will fill in for right fielder J.D. Martinez (sprained right foot), who began the season on the disabled list.
