Chicago White Sox

The White Sox’s spring training camp proved to be the land of opportunity. Three non-roster invitees made the opening-day roster: right-hander Anthony

Swarzak, catcher Geovany Soto and infielder-outfielder Cody Asche.

Swarzak will be used as a starter and a reliever, Soto is expected to be the primary catcher and left-handed-hitting Asche will platoon with Matt Davidson at DH.

The White Sox began rebuilding in the offseason when they traded left-hander Chris Sale to the Boston Red Sox and outfielder Adam Eaton to the Washington Nationals for a total of seven prospects. Rick Renteria was promoted to manager from bench coach to replace Robin Ventura.

“We just tried to make sure that we were fundamentally as sound as we could be in leaving the camp,” Renteria said.

Left- hander Carlos Rodon (left biceps tendinitis) began the season on the disabled list, but the White Sox will go with four starters for at least the first two weeks because of off days in the schedule. Swarzak or right-hander

Dylan Covey, a Rule 5 draft pick from the Oakland Athletics, will take Rodon’s place. Rookie Jacob May won the starting center-field job when veteran Peter Bourjos was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. May is the grandson of former White Sox outfielder Carlos May.
