Chicago White Sox

-

The White Sox made a bit of offbeat history April 14 in their victory against the Minnesota Twins by starting an outfield with three Garcias. Willy Garcia started in left field, making his major league debut after being recalled from Class AAA Charlotte when Melky Cabrera was placed on the paternity list. Willy Garcia was joined by center fielder Leury Garcia and right fielder Avisail Garcia.

It was the first time a major league team started three outfielders with the same last name. The Alou brothers — Felipe, Jesus and Matty — played together in three games for the San Francisco Giants in 1963 but never started together.

Avisail Garcia went 2-for-4, Willy Garcia was 1-for-4 with a double and Leury Garcia finished 1-for-2 with a walk.

It came five days after Sergio Garcia won the Masters.

Omar Narvaez moved into the starting catcher’s role when

Geovany Soto (right elbow) was placed on the disabled list retroactive to April 12. Catcher Kevan

Smith’s contract was purchased from Charlotte to provide depth.

Rookie center fielder Jacob May went hitless in his first 21 atbats through Sunday while striking out eight times.
