San Francisco Giants

-

The Padres might have unexpected competition in the race to the bottom. The flat-lining, old-looking Giants are giving their front office more reasons to consider trading away players this season. Giants leaders such as manager

Bruce Bochy are making a habit of noting the impressive young talent on other teams — such as the Cincinnati Reds, whose young hitters ripped sloppy Giants pitching last weekend.

The Giants have two homegrown regulars around whom to retool: catcher Buster Posey and shortstop Brandon Crawford, both 30.

Brandon Belt, 29, is under contract through 2021. He plays first base, which could be a good landing spot for Posey. The build-around pitcher is

Madison Bumgarner, 27. The team holds team options on him in 2018 and 2019. The salaries will be team-friendly if Bumgarner regains his form in his comeback from a sprained shoulder joint, the April injury that is expected to sideline him several more weeks.

Potential trade candidates in the rotation include three pricey veterans: Johnny Cueto, 31, who is under contract through 2022 but has an opt-out clause after this season; Jeff Samardzija (32, 2020) and Matt Moore (27, team options this year and next).

As if things weren’t bad enough, one of the Giants’ buses broke down Sunday night en route to the Cincinnati airport. Players had to climb onto a bus transporting the team’s staff.
