Nate Karns went on the disabled list after leaving his May 19 start against the Minnesota Twins, but the Royals were confident the right-hander wouldn’t be out for long.

Karns experienced nerve irritation in his forearm and elbow. After skipping him through one turn of the rotation, the Royals were leaning toward having him miss a second start. “He’s feeling better,” manager

Ned Yost said over the weekend. “We knew he’d probably miss one start, maybe two, but not much more than that. We figured it would be 10 to 12 days.”

uThe Royals took an even bigger hit to their rotation when they learned that left-hander

Danny Duffy will be out for six to eight weeks because of a Grade 1 muscle strain in his side. Duffy, who is 4-4 with a 3.54 ERA in 11 starts, was injured while covering first base when he stretched for the throw and fell. He felt discomfort Sunday night, and it was worse the next morning when he got up.

uYost was ejected for the 40th time in his managerial career Saturday in the first inning of a win vs. the host Indians. He later got a phone call from his 3-yearold grandson, Jordan.

“He asked, ‘Granddaddy, did you get thrown out of the game?’ ” Yost said. “I told him I did. He asked me if I had been put in timeout. I guess I kind of was put into timeout.”

“It was like the day was never ending. Glad we got it in.” White Sox right-hander Mike Pelfrey after an 8-2 victory against the visiting Detroit Tigers in what was supposed to be the second game of a doubleheader Friday. The game was delayed one hour and 25 minutes at the start after the opener was rained out and moved back a day.
