Kendall Graveman, the team’s opening-day starter, is being shut down because of a sore shoulder.

He was waylaid by the injury earlier this season, but it has resurfaced and it appears Graveman could be out for an extended time.

“We want to make sure he isn’t pushing through pain or anything,” manager Bob Melvin said.

Graveman’s absence opens a door for Daniel Mengden, who struggled for much of last season while pitching with a foot injury and was sent back down to Class AAA Nashville. In his first 2017 start, he allowed five runs in 31⁄ 3 innings Monday at Cleveland.

Jharel Cotton, another young A’s starter, was summoned from the minors when Jesse Hahn (shoulder) went on the disabled list May 27. Cotton no-hit the New York Yankees for 52⁄ innings 3 in the first start of his return before giving up a two-run homer that proved decisive in a 3-2 loss.

Hahn’s MRI showed no major damage, and the team was hoping his DL stay would be 10 days.

uIs Sonny Gray in jeopardy of pitching himself off the team? His name has been coming up in trade talks as he tries to rebound from the injuries that have slowed him since last year.

Gray, who was dominating with his slider and came into the week with three consecutive quality starts (19 innings, 22 strikeouts, 2.84 ERA), will be a free agent after the 2019 season.
