New York Mets
The Mets have had trouble with injuries (again), and they’ve had trouble talking about injuries (again). They don’t seem to be able to solve the first problem, but they came up with a new solution for the second one.
“I’m not at liberty to discuss any injury situation,” manager
Terry Collins said. The Mets later backed away from that drastic switch, but general manager Sandy Alderson told The New York Times he thinks “less is more.” In general, Alderson and Collins said, they will try not to discuss timetables for players returning from injuries because they change so frequently.
So has the new policy changed anything? Not exactly. The Mets sent left fielder Yoe
nis Cespedes on a minor league rehabilitation assignment and suggested he could return to their lineup on Memorial Day. Then Cespedes felt soreness in his right quadriceps. He had to be scratched from a game, and another Mets plan had to be scrapped.
No matter how they talk about it, the Mets are hurting. Besides Cespedes, their best hitter, they’ve been without Noah Syndergaard, their best starter, and
Jeurys Familia, their best reliever.
Neither is due back soon, by anyone’s timetable.
uDespite all of the injuries, the Mets’ poor record led to speculation about Collins’ job status. But Newsday reported Collins still has the strong support of owner
Fred Wilpon, meaning no change is likely soon.
