Colorado Rockies

-

They go into June as one of the more formidable Rockies teams in franchise history. And unlike their predecessors, these Rockies are winning at a high rate on the road and have good pitching depth.

Several starting pitchers, led by rookies Antonio Senzatela, Kyle Freeland and German Marquez, have more than offset the lengthy absences of Jon Gray and Chad Bettis, whom manager Bud Black rated Nos. 1 and 2 in the rotation entering the season. It would be too much to ask of closer Greg Holland to maintain his performance, if only because it has been robotically good. Holland went into this week 20for-20 in save attempts and hadn’t allowed a home run until giving up a meaningless one Sunday.

At Coors Field, the Rockies newcomer has been especially dominant, striking out 16 and allowing just one run in nine innings through Sunday. Opponents were hitting .103 (3-for-29) against him in Denver.

The Rockies’ .900 win rate in one-run decisions (9-1) going into the week probably is unsustainable, too, but a powerful bullpen is lifting the team’s late inning confidence. “It’s kind of a new feeling, that’s for sure,” Nolan Arenado told The Denver Post.

uGray, sidelined since midApril by a broken left foot, isn’t close to returning but is expected to soon increase his throwing session to 70 pitches.
