Chicago White Sox

-

Yoan Moncada made his much-anticipated White Sox debut July 19.

The second baseman was recalled from Class AAA Charlotte a day after the White Sox traded third baseman Todd Frazier and right-handed relievers David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle to the New York Yankees for righthanded reliever Tyler Clippard and three minor leaguers, including top outfield prospect Blake Rutherford.

Acquired from the Boston Red Sox in a December trade for lefthander Chris Sale, Moncada was considered the top prospect in baseball. The 23-year-old went 1-for-13 (.077) with a triple and four RBI in his first four games.

“I love his makeup. He’s driven,” manager Rick Renteria said. “There are people who see him and he’s a very gifted athlete, so sometimes he does things very easily that may be misconstrued as being nonchalant. But he can get to balls, he can do things seemingly without any effort.”

Moncada broke into the major leagues late last season and was 4-for-19 (.211) with 12 strikeouts in 19 at-bats.

Clippard replaced Robertson as the closer despite having a rough season for the Yankees. He was 1-5 with one save and a 4.95 ERA in 40 games for New York.

Matt Davidson became the regular third baseman after spending most of the season as the designated hitter. Utility infielder Yolmer Sanchez will get the bulk of the DH at-bats.
