Denver Broncos
Once again, Trevor Siemian has won an open competition to be the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback. First-year head coach Vance
Joseph made the announcement to his team Aug. 21, two days after Siemian established his separation from 2016 first-round pick
Paxton Lynch in a preseason game at the San Francisco 49ers. Siemian, a seventh-round pick in 2015, also won last year’s competition to be the starter, beating out Lynch and veteran Mark Sanchez.
He was 8-for-11 for 93 yards, a touchdown and a 128.2 passer rating against the 49ers.
“It’s a permanent decision,” Joseph said.
Siemian will now get the majority of the first-team reps for the duration of the preseason, starting with the Aug. 26 preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.
“I want Trevor to be himself. He’s focused,” Joseph said.
Siemian went 8-6 as the Broncos’ starter last year, with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Rookie watch: When Joseph was asked if RB De’Angelo
Henderson (sixth round) was “electric” again, he said simply, “Yes he was. He’s a special runner. To watch him in open space, it’s fun to see, because he’s going to make the first guy miss most of the time.” Against the 49ers, Henderson had six rushes for 30 yards with a long of 12, two receptions for 20 yards with a long of 16 and had a 9-yard touchdown reception negated by a penalty. ... LT Garett
Bolles (first round) started, played 37 snaps (49%) and was flagged for three holding penalties and a false start.
Noteworthy: RB Jamaal Charles, the former Kansas City Chiefs starter who’s coming off a knee injury, will make his Broncos debut Aug. 26 against the Packers. . ... Allen Barbre and Max Garcia are competing for the starting job at left guard.
