Washington Redskins

-

Washington’s offense, which ranked No. 3 in the NFL last season, has been embarrassingly weak this preseason.

In last week’s loss to the Green Bay Packers, the Redskins’ firstteam offense finally got a first down after going three-and-out in its first five possessions of the preseason. In its first five possessions against the Packers, the unit was held to three points — and that came after the Redskins recovered a fumble at Green Bay’s 16-yard line.

“We’re a work in progress,” coach Jay Gruden said. “No question about that.” QB Kirk Cousins led a twominute drill that went 78 yards in 10 plays and ended with Cousins’ 4-yard scoring pass to WR Jamison Crowder.

But the first team only rushed for 10 yards on 11 carries, as starting RB Rob Kelley ran nine times for 9 yards. WRs Terrelle Pryor and Josh Doctson, expected to make a huge impact this season, caught one pass each. On the plus side, RB Chris

Thompson caught five passes for 52 yards, Kelley added a tough catch and rookie Samaje Perine had a 29-yard reception.

Rookie watch: Third-round CB Fabian Moreau (torn chest muscle) made his Redskins debut. Covering a punt on his first play as a pro, the former UCLA star hit Trevor Davis as he tried to make the catch, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Washington. He also got a long look at corner with the second team, finishing with two tackles and a pass breakup, though he gave up a 38-yard catch by WR Jeff Janis.

Noteworthy: LB Preston Smith, battling with Junior Galette and Ryan Anderson on the outside, put up a sack, a hurry and a quarterback hit. … NT Phil

Taylor drove up the middle for a sack and added a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit.
