Detroit Lions
The Lions are comfortable continuing contract negotiations with QB Matthew Stafford during the season, but Stafford said Monday he’s not sure if he’ll be open to doing the same.
“I haven’t made any determination on that,” he said.
Stafford and the Lions have been working toward a new contract since early March, but negotiations have only ramped up in the last month.
He’s expected to become the highest-paid player in the NFL on his next contract at more than $25 million per season, and any delay in negotiations likely will drive the price up.
He said earlier he’s “pretty tired of talking about” his contract.
“No matter what happens, I’ve got a year left on my contract here so I’m going to be here this year playing football for this team,” he said as camp began. “So it’s on my shoulders to be as good as I possibly can to help our team win.”
Rookie watch: Fourthround LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin and fifth-round CB Jamal Ag
new had a tackle for loss and a pass breakup, respectively, against the Jets. Both might be ticketed primarily for roles on special teams early. … Kenny Golladay was quiet in his encore after a two-touchdown debut Aug. 13.
Noteworthy: The Lions finally had their expected Week 1 offensive line on the field together for the first time. Although the run game failed to gain traction, RG T.J. Lang’s preseason debut and LT Greg Robinson’s continued improvement are encouraging … Two veteran newcomers — CB D.J. Hayden and DT
Akeem Spence — look like valuable additions at perhaps Detroit’s two deepest spots on defense.
