Now would be a great time for Desmond to produce in line with the massive investment in him last offseason. He might be needed at shortstop because of Trevor Story’s poor hitting, and his versatility and slugging could help Colorado secure its fourth playoff berth in franchise history. The price for Desmond, who was activated from the disabled list Aug. 28 after recovering from a calf injury, was a $70 million contract that also cost Colorado a first-round draft pick.
