Doctors believe they have corrected Victor Martinez’s heart problem and that the 38-year-old designated hitter will be ready for the start of spring training.

Martinez had what was termed a minor procedure to fix an irregular heartbeat that landed him on the disabled list for the second time this season Aug. 27. He also was sidelined for nearly two weeks in late June. Rookie catcher-first baseman

Lewicki was called up from Class AAA Toledo (Ohio) after the trade of longtime ace Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros on Aug. 31. Lewicki was scheduled to make his major league debut Sept. 4 against the Kansas City Royals after going a combined 14-4 with a 3.38 ERA in 25 starts with Toledo and Class AA Erie (Pa.). Mikie Mahtook and Andrew Romine were being platooned in left field after Justin Upton was dealt to the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 31. Rookie JaCoby Jones played center, and Alex Presley was in right.
