49ers’ keys to victory
QB Jimmy Garoppolo proved last season he gives the 49ers a chance to win every game, and if he can find a weakness in the Vikings defense (there aren’t many), San Francisco can steal one in Minnesota.
The Vikings have a high-powered offense on paper, but they’ve stalled in the preseason. Garoppolo was 5-0 as a starter last season but threw five interceptions. He’ll need to take care of the ball against a defense that capitalizes on mistakes. And he’ll be at a disadvantage with 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Vikings’ keys to victory
All the pressure is on QB Kirk Cousins, and rightfully so after he signed an $84 million deal. But the Vikings have plenty of weapons. The key will be to keep Cousins upright.
The Vikings will likely be without C Pat Elflein (ankle, shoulder), and the team is without G Nick Easton (neck) for the season. Keep Cousins healthy is the main priority for this offense. Fans don’t want flashbacks to 2016. The return of RB Dalvin Cook should ease the pressure on Cousins.
Who wins?
The Vikings defense, led by underrated S Harrison Smith, will be too much for the golden child. Jimmy G throws two interceptions and Minnesota walks away with a solid win.
