Bengals’ keys to victory
Cincinnati can find success if its stout defensive line can consistently apply pressure on a Colts offensive line that will enter the season with several question marks. DLs Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap, both of whom just signed contract extensions, will be the heart of the pass rush. CB William Jackson could further the success of the defense if he can keep up with Colts WR T.Y. Hilton throughout the game. The new offensive line also will need to prove it can keep QB Andy Dalton upright.
Colts’ keys to victory
QB Andrew Luck makes his first regular-season start since the 2016 finale and will attempt to lead an up-tempo offense. Being able to lean on options outside of star wide receiver Hilton will greatly benefit the offense, especially if TEs Jack Doyle and Eric Ebron get involved. On the defensive side, the Colts will need to continue to implement their bendbut-don’t-break mentality, which was a common theme throughout the preseason in the new 4-3 scheme under new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.
Who wins?
At home and with the momentum of Luck capping off his preseason with a strong performance, the Colts win. The Indianapolis defense keeps the Bengals offense at bay and holds off a fourth-quarter comeback bid.
