Danny Sheridan’s Browns by 3
Jets’ keys to victory: Protecting rookie QB Sam Darnold is imperative. Darnold has shown he can deliver accurate throws to all levels of the defense when he gets time. The big plays in the run game that helped defeat Detroit in Week 1 were non-existent in the Week 2 loss to the Dolphins. The defensive front must keep successfully rushing the passer. Getting splash plays from S Jamal Adams and DE Henry Anderson would help. A faster start from the offense, which has sputtered out of the gate, would build confidence and momentum.
Browns’ keys to victory: The impact talents on both sides of the ball must make plays. DE Myles Garrett dominated in Week 1 but was a non-factor in Week 2. The same is true of rookie CB Denzel Ward. TE David Njoku has flashed ability to get open downfield but has produced just 33 receiving yards on seven receptions through two weeks. QB Tyrod Taylor needs to attack more down the field, but he also will need his line to give him time and confidence to survey the defense. Greg Joseph, the team’s new kicker according to news media reports, replaces Zane Gonzalez, who missed four attempts in Week 2.
Matchup to watch: Jets WR Quincy Enunwa vs. Browns CB Denzel Ward. Enunwa is emerging as Darnold’s favorite target and proving capable of being the top receiver. Ward has shutdown corner potential.
Who wins? The Browns have been so close to winning for the first time since 2016. Playing at home in front of a desperate crowd makes it finally happen.
