TOP 5 PROSPECTS

- Tanner Smith

1. Triston McKenzie, RHP: One of the game’s better pitching prospects, McKenzie passed his Class AA test with a 2.68 ERA in 16 starts. The 21-year-old has a compact and repeatable delivery but has struggled to stay healthy.

2. Ethan Hankins, RHP: Hankins, 18, features an easy plus fastball that can generate swings and misses, while his curveball, slider and changeup all have above-average potential. He is likely to be brought along slowly due to shoulder concerns. Look for him to return to rookie ball, where he threw just three innings last year.

3. Nolan Jones, 3B: A bat-first lefty, Jones hit .283 with 19 home runs across two Class A levels in 2018. His above-average pitch recognition should result in high walk totals with big power. The 20year-old is seen as a below-average to fringe third baseman and could move across the diamond.

4. Yu Chang, SS: Chang’s power took a step back with his 13 home runs in 2018. He has plus speed with the ability for double-digit steals, and while his uppercut swing is designed for power, the bat path causes some swing and miss. The 24-year-old is nearly major league ready, but he’s more of a utility piece for 2019.

5. Bo Naylor, C-2B-3B: Naylor, 18, is a pure hitter with a smooth left-handed stroke who should develop power over time. His position is up in the air but he could move fast at second or third base. He’ll start 2019 in short-season ball.
