Rockies look to fill gaps

-

Who will replace Adam Ottavino?

Colorado has a big hole to fill in the bullpen after Ottavino took his 2.43 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 13 strikeouts per nine innings to the Yankees in free agency. The Rockies hope they have enough depth to fill the late-inning void before closer Wade Davis.

Scott Oberg (2.45 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, .571 OPS against) and Seunghwan Oh (2.53 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, .626 OPS against) will likely absorb most of the innings that went to Ottavino. Beyond them, however, the Rockies lack consistency. They will need Bryan Shaw, Chris Rusin and Jake McGee to rebound from rough years to fill out the bullpen pecking order.

Who will play second base?

The Rockies elected to not re-sign three-time Gold Glove winner D.J. LeMahieu this winter, opening the door for a trio of youngsters to compete for the starting job in spring training. Ryan McMahon, 24, and Garrett Hampson, 24, were solid if unspectacular in limited action last season.

Brendan Rodgers, 22, could be the most intriguing player of the three. Colorado’s top prospect after being selected third overall in the 2015 draft, Rodgers has hit .291 with an .837 OPS in four minor league seasons. A shoulder injury ended his 2018 campaign early at Class AAA Albuquerque, but the Rockies will give Rodgers the opportunity to seize thejob in spring training. — Matt Eppers
