Prospect to watch: Matt Manning, RHP. Manning, 22, is poised to be an impact big-league arm. His fastball is an easy plus offering that plays well in front of a developing curveball and an aboveaverage change-up. He posted a 2.56 ERA with 148 strikeouts in 1332⁄3 innings at Class AA, where he’ll likely return to begin 2020.

Who’s going to catch?

The Tigers enter spring training with a glut of catchers. Former Yankees backup Austin Romine, whom Detroit signed to a one-year, $4 million deal in December, is the favorite to start. Last year, Romine filled in for Gary Sanchez, hitting .281 with a .748 OPS overall across 72 games. Romine is the front-runner to get the most playing time, but the Tigers have other options, too.

Grayson Greiner is also in the mix for the starting job heading into 2020. He hit .202 with five homers and 19 RBI in 58 games last season. Jake Rogers, a former third-round pick, struggled at the plate after being called up to the majors last season. But in the minors (across Classes AA and AAA) he hit 14 home runs and had a .845 OPS.

Eric Haase hit 28 home runs for Cleveland’s Class AAA Columbus (Ohio) team in 2019 and made the International League All-Star team.

What will their rotation look like?

The Tigers are looking to solidify a rotation that struggled last season. Detroit signed veteran right-hander Ivan Nova to a one-year deal over the winter. While he struggled with a 4.72 ERA in 2019, Nova won 11 games for the White Sox.

Former first overall draft pick Casey Mize has a chance to make the major league rotation this season. Before he was shut down for a shoulder injury at the end of 2019, Mize dominated his minor league opponents (ERA of 2.55 and a WHIP of 0.94 in high A and Class AA).

There’s also a chance Michael Fulmer returns from Tommy John surgery at some point.
