BURNING QUESTIONS
How will Mookie handle spotlight?
If the Dodgers didn’t have enough star power, they pulled off the biggest trade of the offseason, acquiring superstar Mookie Betts and lefty David Price from the Red Sox. Betts gives the Dodgers a second monster bat in the lineup to go with MVP Cody Bellinger’s, seemingly making a team that won 106 games last year even better. He will also draw a lot of attention and scrutiny.
Cab Betts pick up where he left off and help get the Dodgers their first World Series title since 1988?
How will the pitching sort out?
The top three starters will be Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw and David Price. They traded away depth in Kenta Maeda (in the Betts deal) and didn’t resign Hyun-Jin Ryu. The competition for the final two spots likely will be between Julio Urias, Alex Wood, Dustin May (their top pitching prospect), Tony Gonsolin and Jimmy Nelson. With the Dodgers’ abundance of talent, they’ll be able to wait for the perfect combination.
The Dodgers’ bullpen was a mess down the stretch last year, and little was done to remedy it besides signing former Oakland Athletics closer Blake Treinen, who melted down last year. Jansen blew a career-high eight saves last year. They may to find a replacement in Brusdar Graterol, Treinen, Joe Kelly and Pedro
Baez. Graterol was in the original threeway Betts deal, but the Boston Red Sox balked at his physicals and he wound up with the Dodgers. He has the 100 mph fastball and makeup to step into that role. The Dodgers also have enough prospects and riches to trade for help.
