BURNING QUESTIONS

- – Tom Haudricourt, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

How will the bullpen shake out?

Manager Craig Counsell likes to use his relief corps liberally, with starters rarely pitching deep into games. Closer Josh Hader is often used to record more than three outs. Three lefties are pretty much set with Hader, Alex Claudio and swingman Brent Suter.

Veteran right-hander David Phelps, a free agent addition, is expected to hold one spot but the rest of the right-handed contingent in the ’pen will be a competition that includes hard-throwing Ray Black, who is out of minor league options; Bobby Wahl, who missed 2019 with a torn ACL; Devin Williams, who made his big-league debut last season, and J.P. Feyereisen. Others will are in the mix, including non-roster invitees featuring Justin Grimm and Jake Faria.

Will third base be a time share?

In 2017 and 2018, the Brewers had Travis Shaw hold down third base, slugging a total of 63 home runs. When he slumped last season, Mike Moustakas took over at the hot corner and finished the season with 35 home runs.

But Shaw was non-tendered and Moustakas bolted for Cincinnati. With options limited and their payroll budget being tightened, the Brewers signed veterans Eric Sogard and Jedd Gyorko, who are expected to share time at third base.

The left-handed-hitting Sogard had a bounce-back ’19 season with Toronto and Tampa Bay. Gyorko, a right-handed hitter, was plagued by injuries while splitting between the Cardinals and Dodgers. Matching the power totals of their predecessors won’t be easy.
