CAROLINA PANTHERS
Cornerback Quarterback
Stopping short of declaring the Sam Darnold trade a failure, the Panthers can’t argue with an incomplete. As Year 3 of the Matt Rhule era begins, the pressure is mounting to find more than a band-aid starter. Cam Newton returned for an end-of-season cameo and isn’t expected back. Getting the team’s preferred quarterback between Kenny Pickett (Pittsburgh) and Malik Willis (Liberty) could require a trade up in the first round.
Wide receiver Defensive end Offensive line
The interior line and left tackle spots are all under consideration for upgrades. Cameron Erving can play left tackle in a pinch but ended last season on injured reserve and the Panthers are his fourth stop in seven seasons. Mississippi State’s Charles Cross is a fit if Carolina stands pat with its firstround pick.
D.J. Moore and Terrace Marshall are the top receivers on the depth chart for now. It’s a passable pairing. To contend with the Buccaneers, another weapon would be welcomed no matter who is throwing passes in Carolina. Marshall, a second-round pick in 2021, caught 17 passes and averaged 8.1 yards per reception as a rookie.
Brian Burns had nine sacks last season but the team’s leader in the category (Haason Reddick, 11) left in free agency to join the Eagles. George Karlaftis (Purdue) and Jermaine Johnson II (Florida State) are likely to get a first-round look.
Jaycee Horn ended the year on IR following foot surgery. Depth won’t be an issue if former first-round pick C.J. Henderson takes a step forward.
