Take it to the bank: This EDM trio rocks

Fans

POP ROCKERS TO EDM STARS: of Cash Cash have evolved with the EDM trio, whose breakout single Take Me Home is No. 16 on USA TODAY’s top 40 airplay chart. Starting out, they were lumped into the alt-rock scene — playing Warped tour and opening for Metro Station. But as the group matured and the EDM genre exploded, Cash Cash ditched traditional instruments for turntables. “A lot of our fans have grown up into the ( EDM) scene,” says Sam Frisch, 26. “They were in middle or high school then, but now they’re in or out of college and going to clubs.”

The DJ group

HEY, MR. DJS: (Frisch and brothers Jean Paul Makhlouf and Alex Makhlouf ) produced Krewella’s Live for the Night and released remixes of Bruno Mars ( Treasure), Capital Cities ( Safe and Sound) and Calvin Harris ( Let’s Go). The band released its EP Overtime in October and is now in the midst of a sprawling U.S. tour, with stops at Electric Daisy Carnival New York, Firefly and Electric Forest.

It wasn’t until

SIR REMIX-A-LOT: the New Jersey natives began doing remixes that they saw a viable career as electronic artists.

“Our friends would come up to us like, ‘Man, your remixes are a lot better than the original songs,’ so we slowly merged what we were doing remix-wise with our original production,” Frisch says.

‘HOME’ IN THE TOP 40: Take Me Home is an irresistible radio hit, thanks in part to the electrifying vocals of Bebe Rexha, whom they met through mutual friends. “The song came together really fast — we wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered it in only two or three days,” Frisch says. “We jelled really well together and it was like, ‘Wow, I think we’ve got something really special here.’ ”

INFLUENCES: The

‘BANGARANG’ band has been mentored by Hardwell, Nicky Romero and Krewella, but Frisch says Skrillex has been one of their biggest inspirations, given his roots in emorock band From First to Last. “We haven’t been ‘true’ DJs since we were little kids like (many of ) the European guys, so seeing Skrillex grow up and really get accepted, that’s been cool for us, like, ‘Yeah, we can do this.’ ”

A con

PINCHING THEMSELVES: stant pleasure is hearing Take Me Home on the radio, which happened for the first time when they were in the studio recording. A friend called to tell them, “‘Your song ’s on the radio!’ We ran out to the car and turned on the radio,” Frisch says. “It’s an amazing feeling every time.”
