USC, NOTRE DAME CONTINUE TO PAY LARGE SEVERANCES

-

The University of Southern California paid a combined total of nearly $2.2 million in severance money during the 2013 calendar year to former football coach

Lane Kiffin and former men’s basketball coach Kevin O’Neill, according to the university’s new federal tax return. The return, provided Monday in response to a request from USA TODAY Sports, also showed athletics director Pat Haden being credited with just more than $2.5 million in compensation for 2013, a figure that likely continues to make him the nation’s highest-paid AD. Notre Dame also released its federal tax return Monday, and that document showed football coach

Brian Kelly with a base salary of just under $1 million, which represents a nearly $300,000 increase from his base for the 2012 calendar year. Former Fighting Irish football coach Charlie

Weis continued to receive more money from the school than any athletics employee. He again received nearly $2.1 million in 2013 as part of an ongoing separation agreement that, according to the return, includes additional payments through December 2015. Notre Dame AD Jack Swar

brick was credited with more than $1.3 million in total compensation for 2013, just over $200,000 more than in 2012. Women’s basketball coach Muf-

fet McGraw was credited with nearly $1.3 million in compensation from the school, and the return showed her with an additional $300,000 from an outside multimedia and marketing rights entity that handles Notre Dame athletics. Men’s basketball coach Mike Brey received just under $1 million from the school plus $720,000 from the multimedia and marketing firm.
