Fey and Poehler bring their stars back to ‘SNL’

Special guests join ‘Sisters’ for parodies and holiday cheer

- Carly Mallenbaum

It was 2008 when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler opened Saturday Night Live as Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton. As co-hosts of SNL this weekend, the former cast members of the show brought back their impressions and were joined by surprise guests. Here are highlights from the Sisters’ stars’ episode:

1. As Palin and Clinton, Fey and Poehler travel through time to give Kate McKinnon-as-present-day-Hillary advice.

Words of wisdom from ’08 Clinton (Poehler), who doesn’t want ’15 Clinton to be too confident about becoming president:

“On Christmas Eve of 2007, I was cocky, too. Then someone named Barack Obama stumbled out of a soup kitchen with a basketball and a cigarette and stole my life.”

Incoherent advice from ’08 Palin (Fey):

“You gotta do what you believe in your spirit, but also America. But not teachers and their fat liberal books, but also, even why worry about fast-food wages ...” she went on.

2. In a music video parodying Swift’s friend-squad-filled Bad Blood, leather-clad Fey and Poehler introduce their “Dope Squad.”

Instead of supermodels, the ladies’ squad includes nannies, a gynecologist and celebrity friends Gayle King, Robert Downey Sr. and Amy Schumer. “I did her show ( Inside Amy Schumer), so she owes me one,” Fey raps. Asks Schumer, “Wait, is this not a charity thing?”

3. Paul McCartney joins Fey, Poehler and Springsteen for Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.

Springsteen and the E Street Band singing the holiday hit is always special, but having them perform it at the end of SNL with Fey, Poehler and surprise guest McCartney is a Christmas treat. The former Beatle sang along and jingled bells while the credits rolled.

Other cameos included Maya Rudolph, who sang and played a TV co-host from the Bronx, and Darrell Hammond, who brought his Donald Trump impression back for the show’s cold open.
