Movie magic: Ransom Riggs’ quirky young-adult book Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is the latest title to benefit from a buzzy movie trailer. The visually arresting snippet from director Tim Burton has propelled Miss

Peregrine to No. 4, up from No. 95. That’s the highest spot ever for the 2011 novel. The movie adaptation of the fantasy about a 16-year-old boy who discovers an old home inhabited by children with “magical abilities” is due Sept. 30. “We’ve seen a big pop in sales after Fox debuted the trailer on March 15 on Good Morning

America,” says Quirk Books’ Nicole De Jackmo. Riggs’ two sequels also are back in the top 150: Hollow City is No. 64, while

Library of Souls is No. 98.

Girl power:

Jennifer Weiner’s entertaining stories of women’s

lives, from In Her Shoes to Good

In Bed, have earned her a devoted fan base among grown-ups. Now the novelist is writing for kids, with the fantasy-tinged middle-grade debut The Littlest

Bigfoot, which Aladdin will publish on Sept. 13. It’s the first in a trilogy, and USA TODAY has a first look at the jacket here and an exclusive excerpt at books.usatoday.com. The Littlest

Bigfoot is the story of 12-year-old Alice Mayfair, a misfit shipped off to boarding school. She’d love a friend, and one day she rescues mysterious Millie Maximus from drowning. Millie is a Bigfoot, part of a clan that lives deep in the woods. “The Littlest Bigfoot started as a story I told my daughters, and it’s the kind of book I wished for when I was a kid,” Weiner says. Her 12 USA TODAY best sellers include Who Do You Love, which hit No. 5 last year.
