DELEGATE, 102, CHOKES UP LAWMAKER
Jerry Emmett, the 102-yearold honorary chair of the Arizona Democratic delegation, shared an unexpected and tender moment with U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia on Tuesday.
Lewis, a civil rights leader, spoke to the Arizona dele- gation about focusing on down-ballot races in addition to the presidential election.
After his remarks, Arizona delegate Janie Hydrick guided Emmett to the congressman.
“He went to hug her,” Hydrick said, and Emmett asked Lewis if he knew a friend of hers. They learned Emmett’s best friend is the widow of Lewis’ best friend. “Jerry started to cry … and you could tell (Lewis) was really choked up,” Hydrick said. Maureen Groppe USA TODAY Network
FATHER, INFANT SON ARE TWITTER STARS
Hillary Clinton delegate Bernard Jennings of Miami and his infant son, Ethan, are Twitter sensations.
Jennings was holding Ethan in his arms on the convention floor Monday night when someone snapped their photo. Dad was captured smiling and holding a “Love Trumps Hate” sign. Ethan, 1, pacifier in his mouth, gazed into the distance.
Clinton’s campaign tweeted the shot with the message, “Let’s make sure our future is in the right hands.” By Tuesday morning, the tweet had been seen more than 35,000 times. Michael Collins USA TODAY Network
AND HE RAN, HE RAN SO FAR AWAY
If you think running for president is hard, try running to the Democratic National Convention — from Minnesota.
That’s what delegate Michael Gibino did.
He averaged about 40 miles a day for 30 days, arriving Sunday night after logging nearly 1,200 miles.
“I felt this is what I could contribute to this political revolution, this grass-roots movement that I’ve been part of,” said the 34-year-old supporter of Bernie Sanders. Maureen Groppe USA TODAY Network
