GOMORRAH SUNDANCE, 10 ET/PT

We’re in a brief TV lull between the end of the Olympics and the start of the new season, which is a perfect time for Sundance to debut another of its acclaimed international offerings. This time we’re traveling to Italy with this 12-part hit series about a powerful Neapolitan crime family, which is based on the same bestselling crime novel that inspired the 2008 movie. Marco D’Amore and Fortunato Cerlino star.

MR. ROBOT USA, 10 ET/PT

So now we know: Elliot has actually been in jail this whole time, a revelation that seems to have angered some of the show’s fans.

Robot is a show purpose-built to keep viewers off-balance. We can debate how well or how fairly it does so, but if your bottom-line complaint is you don’t like being fooled, Robot probably isn’t the show for you.

BLACK-ISH ABC, 10:30 ET/PT

If Black-ish wins the best-comedy Emmy, and it has a decent chance, it will be in large part because of this repeat as Dre and Bow try to decide whether to let their children watch the TV coverage of a case alleging police brutality against an AfricanAmerican teenager. Written by series creator Kenya Barris, the episode is an expert blend of comedy and drama, one that beautifully handles the specific, topical issue at hand and the broader, universal family story.
