7:48 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. FIRST WAVE Airfields

6:05 a.m.: The Japanese launch a wave of 183 aircraft — fighters, bombers and bomber-torpedo planes — from their carriers and divide into groups. Their targets are planes on airfields and ships at anchor in the harbor. The attack starts at 7:48 a.m. 7:02 a.m.: U.S. radar operators at Opana mobile radar site, on the northernmo­st point of Oahu, report a large number of incoming aircraft. The planes are believed to be a group of 11 U.S. B-17 bombers flying in from California. 7:15 a.m.: Japanese carriers turn east and launch the second wave of attack planes. 7:48 a.m.: Japanese planes begin bombing aircraft at Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay.

7:50 planes a.m.: bomb Japaneseai­rcraft at Hickam Field. 7:55 a.m.: Japanese planes bomb Ewa Field and ships in the harbor, including the battleship USS West Virginia. 7:57 a.m.: Japanese planes bomb aircraft on Ford Island. Others attack ships along Battleship Row. 7:57 a.m.: A torpedo hits the battleship USS California. 7:58 a.m.: Japanese planes begin bombing aircraft at Wheeler Field.

7:58 a.m.: The Ford Island Command Center, under attack, radios an alert: “AIR RAID, PEARL HARBOR. THIS IS NO DRILL.” The USS Oklahoma, right, capsizes as the USS West Virginia, left, sinks to the harbor floor.

8 a.m.: The USS Oklahoma takes multiple torpedo hits and capsizes in minutes.

8:08 a.m.: The first of multiple bombs hits the USS Arizona. Minutes later, another pierces the powder magazine. The bow explodes, and the ship sinks in minutes. 8:30 a.m.: The first wave of attackers withdraws.
