IN SUIT, BRILES ACCUSES BAYLOR OFFICIALS OF LIBEL

Former Baylor football coach Art Briles is suing three school regents and a vice president for libel and slander, accusing them of falsely stating he knew of reported assaults and alleged gang rapes by players and didn’t report them. The lawsuit also asserts that Baylor officials conspired to keep him from getting another coaching job. Briles was fired in May after an investigation deter- mined Baylor mishandled reports of alleged sexual and physical assaults, some by football players. Briles denies he knew about and failed to report alleged assaults. The suit was filed in Llano County in Central Texas. It names Baylor vice president Reagan Ramsower and three regents — chairman Ronald Murff and board members J. Cary Gray and David Harper. Baylor officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

NEW VEGAS NHL TEAM RUNS INTO TRADEMARK ISSUES

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has denied the Vegas Golden Knights’ trademark application a little more than two weeks after the new NHL franchise unveiled its name and logo. The office cites potential confusion with the team name for the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y., which is also the Golden Knights. In a statement, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league would respond by a June 7 deadline outlining why it thinks the name should be registered “in coexistence” with that of Saint Rose “just as a number of other nicknames currently coexist in professional and college sports (particularly where there is no overlap as to the sport for which the nickname is being used).” The franchise will play next season.

GOLF RULE ADDRESSES WHEN BALL MOVES BY ACCIDENT

Golf ’s governing bodies have responded to Dustin Johnson’s penalty at the U.S. Open by introducing a local rule that will waive the one-shot penalty if a ball moves on the putting green by accident. The local rule, effective in January, applies only to accidental movement on the putting green of the ball and a ball marker. Johnson was lining up a putt on the fifth hole of the final round at Oakmont Country Club when his ball moved slightly. He said he didn’t make it move. The U.S. Golf Association studied video and consulted the rule book, and he was given a one-shot penalty because it was ruled his actions caused the ball to move. Despite the penalty, he won by three.
