Feld Entertainment, owner of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus said in a statement that the “Greatest Show on Earth” will end its 146-year run in May in part due to legal battles with animal rights groups.

Always enjoyed the circus as a kid. Hope all the employees find good jobs. Thanks for the memories. John Rollins

I never understood the circus. I went as a child but as an adult, I’m glad the circus is a thing of the past. I hope the animals have found a haven where they can live out the remainder of their lives. Peter Hoover

How very sad. A staple of American culture dies, yet “reality TV” remains. Scott Hardy Another kill by the left wing. It wasn’t that the animals were mistreated but that they were not in the wild to become extinct by poachers. Jim Robinson

I’m very saddened that this action had to be taken! I know kids today can find out much about any kind of animal on the Internet, but they will not be able to experience the joy of the whole family going to the circus together for a day of real excitement, glitz, unique smells and just downright fun! I’m so sorry for their loss. Pauline Elliott

The circus, another iconic American tradition, “bites the dust,” thanks to activism.

I love animals, but there must have been a way to compromise, so as to allow Ringling Bros. to continue to operate. Gary Beam

Good riddance! They’ve been mistreating animals for 146 years. The Ringling Bros. will not be missed.

And shame on them for the hell they have created for these poor creatures. Richard Halpern
