Reporters need to do their job, report facts

We need more reporting and less

normalizing of the craziness that is going on in Washington. Every day, I want to hear about President-elect Donald Trump not releasing his taxes and his continued business ties and what an outlier that makes him. I want to hear how he yelled at a CNN reporter during his first news conference since the election and the many ways that freedom of the press is in jeopardy under him. I want to hear less about his tweets on Meryl Streep and more about how rich and conflicted his Cabinet nominees are. More of the inconsistencies, flipflops, lack of plans and flatout lies. These topics need to be top of the page, every day, until democracy and our values are no longer under threat.

Also, we need more and better education about the Affordable Care Act. Some people think Obamacare and ACA are different things — the approval ratings of Kynect, Kentucky’s exchange, are higher than those of the ACA because folks don’t realize they’re the same thing. While Republicans try to overturn the ACA, we need a responsible media to make sure Americans understand what they could be losing because right now they clearly don’t.

We rely on you, the news media, to publicize these issues. Don’t be distracted by the tweets. Don’t cover it once and be done. We need to hear about these things every single day. Shira Fischer Brookline, Mass. FACEBOOK FACEBOOK.COM/ USATODAYOPINION

The traditional press corps is proving to be more and more an arm of the state and no longer a protector of American freedoms. The reason people distrust the news media is not because of the mistakes they make, it’s the bias and who they decide to support at this very critical juncture in history. James Foye

The news media have lost all credibility after their very biased behavior this past election. Case in point: “The New York Times” had to apologize to its readers soon after the presidential election for its biased reporting. Not too many people choose to get their news through the filter of the news media anymore. Bea Liberatore TWITTER @USATOPINION We asked our followers which news outlets they trust the most to deliver accurate facts. CNN, MSNBC, The Washington Post. They may report ugly truths, but they report the truth. @dcsportsfan75 Honestly, it’s USA TODAY. I’m a mass communications major, and all of your papers are on campus. You guys are witty and dependable. @SupremeVixen I trust the Associated Press for the news. The AP reports facts, not influenced by outside organizations. @PlumbbobGreen None. I check multiple sources and try to separate facts from the reporters’ opinion of the facts. @jshepler2000 I know for certain that CNN and The Washington Post are not trustworthy. I’m trying to find a reliable news source. @jasonjerkstore
