Melania Trump, look at those before you

As we transition to a new president, it is

LETTERS LETTERS@USATODAY.COM worthwhile to consider the past first ladies. Each of these women lived a special story while in the White House.

I was a young girl when Jacqueline Kennedy became first lady. On television, she invited us into the White House and made it seem like our house. She made a lasting impression on me when she led Americans through our mourning with such dignity and calm. Meanwhile, Lady Bird Johnson was a strong advocate for planting wild flowers in open spaces throughout America. Despite the turmoil of a war, civil rights and Kennedy’s assassination, she wanted to bring beauty to our country. Today, I’d call her an environmentalist.

Pat Nixon remained in the White House while anti-war protesters demonstrated for years in Washington. That took great courage. When Betty Ford quickly succeeded Pat, she helped provide stability during very unsettling times.

Rosalynn Carter was a champion of the needy and still is to this day. As first lady, Nancy Reagan led a campaign to combat illegal drug use. I remember Barbara Bush as a woman who had strong opinions on certain issues. While first lady Hillary Clinton, who raised a young daughter in the White House, was — and still is — a strong, dedicated woman whom I admire greatly.

Laura Bush was the quiet strength under pressure behind her husband, George, especially in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. I immediately liked her style and devotion. And finally, Michelle Obama worked on children’s nutrition and exercise. She had high standards of conduct and raised two exceptional daughters.

These first ladies regarded it as an honor and privilege to live in the White House.

Melania, I advise you begin your story not as Mrs. Trump living in New York but as a first lady living in the White House. Do not be overshadowed by those around you. You do have something to offer. Let us hear your voice. Take something of value from the ladies before you and, with conviction and purpose, make the position yours.
