Bronze dynamo sends a message

- Letitia James Letitia James is the New York City public advocate.

When the Charging Bull statue was installed on Wall Street in 1989, New York needed a strident symbol of financial strength. And, just as

Charging Bull imbued us with optimism and faith in the power of Wall Street three decades ago, Fearless Girl is the symbol we need today to transform business as usual.

Just two years after the 1987 stock market crash, New York was battered by drugs, the relentless assault of the AIDS crisis and spiking crime rates.

Charging Bull emerged as a symbol of power and defiance when the beleaguered city needed to remind itself and the world of its status as a global powerhouse.

Today, the stock market is booming, crime is at near record level lows, and New York is a flourishing, international tourist destination and financial center. Our city is by no means perfect, but we stand proudly by our title as the best city in the world. We no longer need Charging

Bull to remind us of our strength and power: Now’s the time for a new aspirational message.

On International Women’s Day, a new statue emerged: Fearless Girl. At a moment when Wall Street seems poised for its next evolution, Fearless Girl was installed to bring attention to gender inequity in corporate leadership.

According to recent data, nearly 60% of publicly traded firms around the world have zero female board members. On average, women make up only 16% of the typical American company’s executive team.

She also arrived at a moment when we have a man in the White House who has debased and disrespected women with impunity.

Fearless Girl is not a misappropriation of Charging Bull. She is a signal that if big firms want to compete in a global marketplace, they need more women in their highest ranks. And, by squaring off against the relic of Wall Street’s past greatness, the bronze dynamo sends the message that women are willing to fight for — and win — a more significant stake in the country’s economic future. A powerful beacon for feminism and equality, she is the inspiration American women need to stand their ground, and persist.
