CARL SCHURZ PARK

-

Lee Abbamonte has traveled to every country of the world, but sometimes the travel expert likes to stay put in New York City. And when he does, a picnic at the Carl Schurz Park on the Upper East Side of Manhattan is his go-to spot.

“A lot of people probably don’t know where it is but it’s right on the East River along East End Avenue,” Abbamonte says.

In fact, the park is partially concealed along the East River, making it a hidden gem.

Stroll along the promenade and you’ll get magnificent views of the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse, the Triborough Bridge, the 59th Street Bridge, and Randall’s and Wards Islands. You’ll also spot Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official residence.

Its plentiful green space makes it ideal for picnicking.

Abbamonte likes to pick up Italian sandwiches at Ottomanelli Butcher Shoppe.

“It’s the type of place once common in the city but has since been priced out but is an Upper East Side staple,” he says.

For Peruvian take-out, his favorite spot is Pio Pio, which has several locations throughout the city.

“You can’t go wrong with authentic Peruvian food that would taste good in Lima,” he says.
