A’S MINOR LEAGUE PLAYER DIES AT 24

Casey Thomas, an Oakland Athletics prospect, died in Phoenix, the team announced. There were no details immediatel­y available about the circumstan­ces surroundin­g his death. Thomas, 24, was the son of A’s pro scout Tom

Thomas. The team said Thomas was in extended spring training with the A’s when he died. Thomas spent the 2016 season on the A’s Arizona League team and hit .258 with 18 RBI in 37 games, according to the team. Thomas played for Gateway Community College after graduating from Desert Vista and moved on to play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before the A’s took him in the 34th round of the 2016 draft.
