Comey cost Clinton the presidency, no question

-

LETTERS LETTERS@USATODAY.COM I am deeply disappointed in FBI

Director James Comey, in his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, for strongly defending his decision to announce developments of his ongoing investigation on Hillary Clinton’s emails only 11 days before the presidential election — and saying he would do it all over again if he had to.

First of all, Comey violated the FBI’s and Justice Department’s rules by interfering with a presidential election. Second, he announced the developments with no evidence that Clinton had done anything wrong.

Comey claimed that if he had not announced the developments, the FBI’s reputation would have been severely damaged. This is hard to believe, as the FBI has done a lot of dirty deeds in its day. Comey’s arrogance troubles me, as he seems unwilling or unable to admit that he made a mistake.

But you might say that this whole thing was the fault of the Democrats themselves.

If Bill Clinton had not inappropriately talked with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on her plane, Lynch would have never recused herself and set off Comey’s suspicions about a credible investigation by the Department of Justice, leaving it up to him. Kenneth Zimmerman Huntington Beach, Calif.

Our followers shared their thoughts on FBI Director James Comey saying he believes Russia is still involved in U.S. politics.

That doesn’t sound crazy. It’s an explanation that makes this “administration” make sense. @JaneticsInk

Democrats need to focus on why Hillary Clinton lost states that Barack Obama won. You don’t lose Ohio by 9 points because of Russia. @ChrisBustin13

After Comey’s testimony, and the ongoing investigations, Americans must demand an independent, special prosecutor now! @JeffOstach

Collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia happened. President Trump makes a statement about Russia finding Hillary Clinton’s emails and one week later, WikiLeaks released the first batch of emails. Plus, four people associated with Trump’s campaign have been exposed for communicating with Russia. It might take a little time, but the truth will come out. Mike Bigalow

It’s past time to put up or shut up on this Russian fairy tale. The Democrats have created a James Bond movie in their heads. Let’s not forget this investigation started during President Obama’s administration and found nothing. Robert Rogers

Comey, you didn’t cost Clinton any votes. She won the popular vote by almost 3 million votes. Clinton cost herself votes in the Electoral College by having zero economic message for the Rust Belt, other than “it’s my turn” and arrogantly expecting them to vote Democrat. Her private server, her “deplorable” comment and your subsequent investigation were just icing on the cake. Her fate was sealed when Trump announced he was running. Benjamin Berlinsky
