ANGELS’ TROUT HAS TORN THUMB LIGAMENT
Mike Trout has a torn ligament in his left thumb that might require surgery, an injury that likely derails another strong run at the American League MVP Award. The Los Angeles Angels announced Monday that Trout, their 25-year-old generational talent, suffered torn ligaments when he slid into second base on a successful stolen base attempt during Sunday’s loss at the Miami Marlins. Trout, who won his second MVP award in 2016, was well on his way to a shot at a third, as he leads the AL in home runs (16), on-base percentage (.461) and slugging (.742). He had already compiled 3.5 Wins Above Replacement, a half-win more than the next nearest player, New York Yankees slugger Aaron
Judge. Trout has finished no worse than fifth in MVP voting in his five seasons. This will also mark his first trip to the disabled list. The stint figures to last longer than just 10 days.
