EU SAYS THERE’S STILL TIME FOR BRITAIN TO STAY PUT
European Union leaders said Britain still can reverse itself and remain in the EU when talks over its exit open Monday, less than two weeks after election losses by Prime Minister Theresa May’s government that could suggest more Brits have second thoughts about leaving the 28-nation alliance.
“Until negotiations come to an end, there is always a chance to reopen the door,” France’s newly elected pro-EU leader, Emmanuel Macron, said last week as May stood at his side in Paris.
Germany’s powerful finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, also signaled that Britain would be welcome back in the EU if it had a change of mind.
May, who lost a gamble by holding parliamentary elections June 8 to try to increase her mandate going into the Brexit negotiations, pledges to make a clean break under the best terms possible.
