Indie films help you escape summer heat, superheros and CGI

Summer usually means slim pickings at the movies for those who don’t enjoy superheroe­s, robots or sentient cars. But this year has an unusually stacked slate of well-reviewed low-budget fare that premiered at film festivals such as Sundance, Cannes and Tribeca, starting with black comedy The Bad Batch (in theaters in 10 cities, including New York and Los Angeles, and on iTunes, Amazon and video on demand Friday). The dystopian romance set in a cannibal wasteland premiered at Venice Film Festival last fall and stars Suki Waterhouse, Jason Momoa, Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey.
