UMPIRE SUING MLB WILL WORK ALL-STAR GAME

- — James Pilcher

The umpire who alleged racial discrimination against Major League Baseball in a lawsuit and in two complaints filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was assigned to Tuesday’s All- Star Game, the league announced. Angel Her

nandez, born in Cuba, will call first base in his third All- Star Game. Joe West, one of the more divisive umpires in MLB history, will be behind the plate and serve as crew chief. Hernandez filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati last week seeking back pay and unspecified compensatory damages. He also filed two complaints with the EEOC in June. Hernandez accused MLB of promoting only one minority umpire to permanent crew chief ever (a Hispanic) and that only one non-white umpire has worked a World Series since 2011. MLB spokesman John Blundell said the league is aware of the suit but declined further comment. All- Star assignments include Mark Carlson (second base), Chris Conroy (third base), Manny Gonzalez (left field) and Mike Estabrook (right field).
